A RAM 1500 key replacement in Toronto runs $80 to $650 for a spare when you still have a working key, and $350 to $600 when every key is gone and the truck needs a new proximity fob or FOBIK programmed from scratch. Older transponder-key trucks sit lower, at $250 to $450 for an all-keys-lost call.
Picture it. You are loading plywood at a big-box lot off the 401, you set the fob on the tailgate, and twenty minutes later it is gone. The truck is locked and your spare is in a kitchen drawer forty minutes away.
That is a normal Tuesday for us. Monty’s Locksmith cuts and programs RAM keys at the truck, anywhere in Toronto and the GTA, usually same day.
RAM 1500 Key Replacement Cost in Toronto
Price depends on the model year and whether you still have a working key.
What a Spare RAM 1500 Key Replacement Costs
With one working key present the job is quick. We add a second key to the immobiliser without wiping the system.
- Spare key, working key in hand: $80 to $650, same day
- All keys lost, standard transponder key: $250 to $450, same day and mobile
- All keys lost, smart or proximity key: $350 to $600, same day and mobile
RAM 1500 Key Replacement With No Working Key
All keys lost is longer. We open the truck, cut a blade from scratch, and rewrite the immobiliser so the old keys stop working.

Why RAM Owners in Ontario Worry About Theft
The 2024 Numbers
The Équité Association ranks the Dodge Ram 1500 Series as the second most stolen vehicle in Ontario for 2024, with 1,159 thefts and a theft rate of 0.57%. Nationally it also sits at number two, with 2,018 thefts.
The most frequently stolen model year is 2022. That is a late-model truck with a proximity key, not an old beater.
What Thieves Actually Go After
Full-size pickups hold value, move fast through ports, and part out cleanly. Crews use relay attacks and OBD programming, not smashed windows.
More on the pattern in our top 10 most stolen vehicles update and our car theft prevention notes.
Which Key Does Your Truck Actually Use?
Three platforms cover almost every truck we see:
- 2002 to 2007: chipped blade key on the SKIM immobiliser
- 2008 to 2018: FOBIK running through the WCM or RF Hub
- 2019 and newer: proximity smart key behind a Security Gateway

2002 to 2007: Transponder Key and SKIM
These trucks use a chipped blade key talking to the SKIM immobiliser. Programming is done through the OBD port and needs a PIN code pulled for the vehicle.
2008 to 2018: The FOBIK
Stellantis trucks of this era use a FOBIK, a fob with the blade built into the body that slides into a dash slot and twists. Behind it sits the WCM or RF Hub module.
Professional equipment handles these well. Adding a key and all keys lost are routine.
2019 and Newer: Proximity Smart Key
The current-generation truck uses a push-button-start proximity fob on most trims, with a CY24R high-security emergency blade hidden inside. Base work trucks may still carry a FOBIK.
The RAM Classic sold alongside the new body style kept the older FOBIK, so the model year alone does not settle it. We confirm by VIN before we roll.
RAM 1500 Key Replacement When All Keys Are Lost
Getting Into a Locked Truck
We open the door with picking tools, not wedges and rods. No paint damage, no stretched frame, no broken clips.
Cutting the Blade
The blade is cut on a code machine in the van, from the lock or the VIN. That blade still matters on a push-button truck, because it opens the door when the fob battery dies.
Writing the New Key to the Immobiliser
Last step is the immobiliser. Every previously registered key is erased, so a stolen fob is dead the moment we finish.
More detail on the process is on our all keys lost page, and on the main car key replacement Toronto page.
The Security Gateway on 2019 and Newer Trucks
Why Some Shops Turn the Job Down
From 2018 onward Stellantis fitted a Security Gateway Module that blocks write commands through the OBD port. A tool that could program a 2016 truck simply gets refused on a 2021.
How We Get Authorised Access
We work through manufacturer-sanctioned gateway authorisation rather than defeating it. That keeps the truck’s security intact and keeps the job legitimate.

Protect the Truck After Your RAM 1500 Key Replacement
Autowatch Ghost Immobilisers
A Ghost immobiliser adds a PIN sequence entered on buttons the truck already has. Without it the engine will not start, even with a cloned fob. There is no radio signal for a relay attack to grab.
Ghost 3, officially the Ghost III Pro FD, adds CAN FD support needed by some 2026 and 2027 vehicles and costs a couple hundred dollars more than Ghost II. Both support a bypass key tag at $100 plus tax, or phone pairing on the same principle.
We are certified installers of both. See our anti-theft device page and the Ghost II vs Ghost 3 comparison.
KYCS Locate GPS Tracking
Ghost stops the theft. KYCS Locate recovers the truck if someone tows it. Ontario insurers recognise both, and many reduce the high-theft surcharge when a certified shop does the install.
Frequently Asked Questions About RAM 1500 Key Replacement (FAQs)
Q1: How long does a RAM 1500 key replacement take?
A spare is usually 20 to 40 minutes. All keys lost typically runs 60 to 90 minutes on site once the technician arrives.
Q2: Is a locksmith cheaper than the RAM dealership?
Usually, and the bigger saving is the tow. A dealer needs the truck on the lot. We program in your driveway.
Q3: Can you do a RAM 1500 key replacement at my home or job site?
Yes. Cutting and programming both happen in the van. That is how most RAM work gets done.
Q4: My fob was stolen. Can the thief still use it?
Not after an all-keys-lost procedure. We erase every registered key from the immobiliser, so the stolen fob stops working entirely.
Q5: Does a RAM 1500 key replacement work on a RAM Classic?
Yes. The Classic kept the older FOBIK platform, which we program routinely. Give us the VIN and we will confirm before dispatch.
Final Thoughts on RAM 1500 Key Replacement
A lost fob on Ontario’s second most stolen vehicle is not just an inconvenience. Until the immobiliser is rewritten, that key still starts your truck for whoever has it.
Call 647-850-7156 with your VIN and postal code, or use the contact page. We will confirm the key type, price and arrival window before anyone gets in a van.
