Toronto drivers asking about the Autowatch Ghost 3 usually want one answer: is it worth choosing over the proven Ghost II?
As certified installers of both systems, one of the few shops in the GTA carrying Autowatch certification for Ghost II and Ghost 3, here is the honest comparison.
What both systems do, and why insurers like them
Both are CAN-bus immobilizers that make your vehicle impossible to start without a secret PIN sequence entered on your factory buttons: steering wheel, dash, or console. The code can be up to 20 presses long, and you can change it whenever you like.
There is no radio signal to intercept and no LED to tip off a thief. The unit hides silently in the wiring. Relay attacks, key cloning, and CAN-injection theft, the methods behind most GTA vehicle thefts, simply do not work against a Ghost-protected car. That is why major Ontario insurers recognize a certified Ghost installation for high-theft premium relief. Details on the system are at Autowatch Canada.
What is new in the Autowatch Ghost 3
The Autowatch Ghost 3, sold officially as the Ghost III Pro FD, is built for the newest vehicle platforms. Its headline upgrade is support for CAN FD, the high-speed network used by a growing number of 2026 and 2027 models, including new EVs and luxury SUVs. Ghost II runs on the standard CAN bus, so for several of the newest platforms the Ghost 3 is not just better, it is the only Ghost that works.
Autowatch also rebuilt the hardware: an all-new high-speed processor, lower power consumption, and engine blocking that can work digitally over the CAN and LIN buses as well as through traditional circuit immobilization, depending on what suits your vehicle. Smart immobilization keeps factory app features like remote climate start working normally, according to Autowatch’s official Ghost III specifications.
On price, expect the Ghost 3 to run a couple hundred dollars more than a Ghost II installation. If your vehicle uses CAN FD, that is the one to choose. If it does not, the Ghost II remains every bit as effective as the day it redefined vehicle security.
Skip the PIN: the bypass key-tag and phone pairing
You do not have to enter your PIN before every drive. Both Ghost models support a small, flat bypass key-tag, about the size of a condo fob. Keep it in the car when you start and the system authorizes automatically with a confirmation beep. We stock the key-tag at Monty’s for $100 plus tax.
Prefer to carry less? Pair your smartphone instead. The phone works on the same concept as the tag: when it is detected in the vehicle, no PIN is needed. Many clients keep the PIN as a backup and drive daily with the tag or their phone.
Autowatch Ghost 3 or Ghost II: which one should you install?
It comes down to your vehicle’s year, model, and network architecture. Most vehicles on the road today are fully supported on Ghost II, while many 2026 and 2027 platforms built on CAN FD require the Ghost 3.
Because we install both, we recommend whichever fits your vehicle best, not whichever box is on the shelf. Installation takes a few hours, includes the official Autowatch certificate of installation for your insurer, and carries a one-year warranty. See our Ghost installation page for what is included.

Which drivers need a Ghost most
If your vehicle is on Ontario’s most-stolen lists, an immobilizer is not a luxury. It is the difference between keeping your vehicle and filing a claim:
- Toyota Highlander and RAV4
- Honda CR-V
- Ford F-150 and other full-size pickups
- Lexus RX
- Land Rover Range Rover
- Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee
Many owners of these models receive high-theft letters from their insurer. A certified Ghost installation usually resolves the surcharge.
Autowatch Ghost 3 FAQ
Is the Autowatch Ghost 3 available in Toronto now?
Yes. Monty’s Locksmith is a certified installer for both Ghost II and Ghost 3 across Toronto and the GTA, with mobile installation available.
Do I need Ghost 3 if my car is older than 2026?
Usually not. If your vehicle runs on standard CAN, the Ghost II protects it just as completely, at a lower price. We confirm compatibility by VIN before booking.
Will my insurance premium go down?
Many Ontario insurers reduce or remove high-theft surcharges with a certificate from a certified installation. Bring us your insurer’s letter; we handle these weekly. See our guide to insurance anti-theft letters.
Can I move a Ghost to my next car?
Usually yes. See our Ghost transfer guide.
